How it started:

Pittsboro’s origins date back to 1787, when the town was officially established. Its name honors William Pitt the Younger, the second son of William Pitt the Elder, the Earl of Chatham—who is the namesake of Chatham County. Although the Earl’s title was inherited by his eldest son, it is the younger Pitt who is commemorated in the town’s name.

The courthouse in Pittsboro highlights the town's historical roots and serves as a lasting symbol in the downtown area.

Pittsboro’s historic courthouse stands as a testament to the town’s enduring legacy. Located at the site of the county’s second, third, and fourth courthouses, it has long been a focal point for civic life in Chatham County.

The brick exterior of the historic courthouse, originally constructed in 1881, remains an integral part of the building. In 2010, a devastating fire gutted the interior, but the structure was rebuilt, preserving its distinctive architectural heritage. The courthouse continues to symbolize Pittsboro’s resilience and commitment to honoring its history.

Today, the fifth courthouse—the current judicial center—serves the community, reflecting both tradition and progress.

Historic buildings in Pittsboro tell tales of resilience and creativity, while local artisans have played a pivotal role in Chatham County’s development. Pittsboro is a place where history and progress go hand in hand.
